If you’re gluten intolerant (or sensitive), you’ll want to avoid these foods too

If you’ve adopted a gluten free diet because you are either sensitive or intolerant to gluten, but you’re still not feeling all the beneficial effects of being gluten free you may be “cross reacting” to another food.

Some foods have structures that are similar enough to gluten that you could have a “cross-reaction”. In this case, your body sees something that closely resembles gluten and attacks it. You’ll get the same or similar auto-immune reaction and find yourself with the same reactions as if you ate gluten.

And here’s the kicker, if you have the neurologic “extra-intestinal” manifestation of gluten sensitivity (yes, there are other problems than just Celiac’s Disease and gut reactions to gluten), it could take up to 9 months to calm your symptoms down. So, sit back, strap yourself in and get ready for the ride. It could take a while. But when you get there, life will be more enjoyable and a lot healthier. Oh, one last thing. You should know that being gluten free is an “all or nothing” deal. Either you’re gluten free or you’re not. There’s not a mostly gluten free option. This is an immune reaction just like the friend you know with a peanut allergy. 1 peanut, even a half of a peanut causes a reaction. So it can be for some people with Gluten.

Here is a list of the most common foods that cross-react with gluten.

  • Amaranth
  • Buckwheat
  • Chocolate
  • Coffee
  • Corn
  • Dairy (Milk and Cheese (Alpha-Casein, Beta-Casein, Casomorphin, Butyrophilin & Whey Protein)
  • Egg
  • Hemp
  • Millet
  • Oats
  • Polish wheat
  • Potato
  • Rice
  • Sesame
  • Sorghum
  • Soy
  • Tapioca
  • Teff
  • Yeast
